High Performance NicheStack Ported to Low Footprint KROS

Standards-based RTOS Now Includes RFC Compliant Network Stack

San Jose, Calif., September 22, 2006 -- Interniche Technologies, Inc. and KROS Technologies, Inc. jointly announced NicheStack IPv4/v6 (a TCP/IP stack) has been ported to KROS, a real-time operating system (RTOS) produced by KROS Technologies of Boca Raton, FL, for the Altera Nios II embedded processor.

Powerful Real-time Suite

KROS Real-time Suite includes a GUI, a file system and a real-time kernel. This real-time operating system provides fast, deterministic multitasking and uses the POSIX API for increased portability. Many companies now require POSIX due to its high level of flexibility. KROS can be as small as 30 kilobytes in size. This small footprint combination leads to cost reduction on mass produced devices, due to its low hardware requirements. Features which are not used by the application are automatically excluded from RAM and ROM.

Customers using KROS are in the defense, test equipment, automotive electronics, and other embedded industries, including Raytheon, Windermere and Thales.

Flexible Networking Stack

NicheStack from InterNiche Technologies of Campbell, CA, is a complete TCP/IP protocol stack for connected device implementations. The IP layer can be configured as a standard client machine, an IP router, or a multi-homed server. It provides high throughput and has an extremely small memory requirement for its feature set. A minimal Boot Client (ARP, IP, ICMP, UDP, DHCP and TFTP) can be as small as 12.8 KB. A full featured TCP/IPimplementation with a sockets API has a typical total ROM and RAMrequirements of 50 KB on a 32-bit processor.

The advantages of NicheStack on KROS include its low footprint requirement and its portability. A typical KROS / Iniche system use one-tenth of the resources of a similarly configured Linux system. This enables the embedded systems community to build applications such as those used in automobiles or for defense which require the POSIX API standard.

James Roth, CEO of KROS Technologies, liked the quality, reputation and flexibility of the NicheStack product. NicheStack IPv4/v6 combines small size, extreme portability, high performance while maintaining RFC compliance. This product offers what many competitors do not have, Roth said. Competitors only offer compliance with the most frequently used features, not all of them. They may also use their own programming interface instead of a standards based one. NicheStack is standards based and allows compliance with all features.

Availability

KROS Real-time Suite, including the InterNiche TCP/IP stack, is available through KROS Technologies. KROS software is ready to run on the Altera Cyclone and Stratix development boards. A binary demo is available through the KROS Technologies web site.
