NicheLite for STR91x

The NicheLite for STR91x product includes the InterNiche Nichelite TCP/IP Stack, HTTP Server, FTP Server, and TFTP Server and Client. The target platform is the STR910-Eval board from ST Microelectronics.

Loading the Software

Refer to the "STR910-EVAL Evaluation Board User Manual" from ST Microelectronics (UM0174) for information regarding how to properly configure and cable the board. The NicheLite software uses the Ethernet, UART1, and LCD Display devices.

The NicheLite software is contained in the file, nichelite.hex, which must be copied to the Flash memory of the STR912 processor. This can be accomplished using the RLink Debugger-Programmer device (part number STX-RLINK, from Raisonance).

  1. Install the RFlasher software from the RLink CD onto the Host PC.
  2. Connect the RLink device to the STR910-Eval board using the JTAG-ARM adaptor (included with the RLink product).
  3. Start the RFlasher application and configure it for the STR912FW44 target device. Use the default device values. Refer to the "RFlasher, Overview and Getting Started" document for additional information.
  4. Load the nichelite.hex file into the RFlasher application.
  5. Erase the Flash memory in the STR912 processor.
  6. Program the Flash memory with the nichelite.hex data.
  7. Verify that the program data.
  8. Start a terminal emulator program on the Host PC. This can be HyperTerminal or Tera Term Pro. Configure the Host PC's COM port as: 115200 baud, 8-bit data, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
  9. Reset and run the program. This may require cycling power to the board.

Running the Software

When the NicheLite software is started, start-up messages are displayed in the terminal emulator window. After the board is initialized, NicheLite will attempt to obtain an network IP address using DHCP. If a DHCP Server is not available, the IP address defaults to 10.0.0.100. The IP address is displayed on the LCD Display, and may change during the DHCP negotiations.

At the end of the initialization phase, the NicheTool prompt, "INET>", is display on the terminal emulator window, and the user can enter commands to display NicheLite structure and statistics or exercise the TFTP Client module. Refer to the "Diagnostic Suite Technical Reference" document for additional information.

The HTTP Server can be accessed by setting a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla's Firefox, to the URL: http://10.0.0.100 (or the IP address obtained from the DHCP Server).

The FTP Server can be accessed from a FTP Client application running on the Host PC. Users can log onto the FTP Server with username, "guest", and password, "guest". Any of the HTTP Server files or the "memory" files in the NicheLite Virtual File System (VFS) can be retrieved using the FTP Client commands. VFS files are read-only with the exception of the "null" file, which can accept any amount of data.

There is a one-hour limit on the execution of the software.

Trouble Shooting

If the NicheLite software fails to run, please check the following:

  1. Verify that all Jumpers and DIP Switches are correctly configured.
  2. Verify that the software was correctly flashed.
  3. Verify that the power, ethernet, and serial cables are correctly connected. The software will not start unless the board is connected to a "live" network. If the LCD Display is blank, reset the board by cycling power to the board.
  4. Verify that your Host PC configuration is as follows: 
            IP Address : 10.0.0.x   (or a DHCP Server is available)
        Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
        Gateway    : 10.0.0.1
        Serial port: 115200 baud, no parity, 1 stop, no flow control
  5. Verify that there is no other device on the network with the same IP address.
